Farrell told him that Stevenson and Linville had not done well career-wise since leaving MASHFarrell believed the Radar character was the heart and soul of the show. He was able to leave the army on compassionate grounds. In real life Gary Burghoff made the choice to leave because he wished to spend more time with his family. He didnt look like he belonged in the show but quite honestly he proved himself quite often despite his amusing little quirks.
